Cherry Compound Butter That's Bursting with Real Cherry Flavor
Cherries can be a little tricky in the kitchen, since there are soooo many types that vary in their flavor. To get the most punchy, fruity, sweet flavor in our whipped cherry butter, I found that good-quality cherry jam is the way to go. Fresh cherries can sometimes taste mild, resulting in bland, boring compound butter - snooze. And canned or jarred cherries add far too much moisture, making the butter split and watery - ick! And since cherry jam is already reduced and thickened, it literally only takes 5 minutes to whip up this luxuriously creamy cherry whipped butter!
I love spreading this fruity cherry butter on biscuits, pancakes, or my German bread rolls for breakfast. And it also makes a great pick-me-up afternoon treat slathered on toasted bread or even a slice of coffee cake. Ok, I'm officially drooling, so let's get to it!

Carissa's Kitchen Tip
This cherry butter is wayyy easier to spread on baked goods if it's at room temperature. So let it sit out on the counter to soften a bit, for a smooth and creamy topping.
The Ultimate Hack for Compound Butter: Jam
Seriously, by swapping fresh cherries for cherry jam, you don't have to worry about pitting cherries, leaving the skin on or taking it off, reducing and thickening the juice, chopping it small enough, or adding additional sweeteners. Oof it makes me tired just thinking about all that! Instead, just spoon some jam into your bowl of whipped butter, give it a good mix, and away you go!

5-Minute Whipped Cherry Butter
Ingredients
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
- ¼ cup cherry jam
- ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
Instructions
- In the bowl of a stand mixer or in a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until it’s fluffy.
- Add the cherry jam and almond extract, and mix again until everything is well-combined.
- To store, spread the mixed butter in an airtight container. Store in the fridge.
Notes
- Cherries: While it might be tempting to add fresh cherries to your butter, I found that they made the butter watery & split. Instead, reach for your favorite good-quality jam like Bonne Maman.
- Butter: Allow your butter to soften room temperature for easy mixing. And for a rich flavor & super creamy texture, splurge on a high-fat European butter such as Kerrygold.
- Equipment: I like using my electric hand mixer, but you could also use a good ol' wooden spoon or a silicone spatula & some elbow grease. Just note that your butter might not be quite as fluffy.
