What is a Smoothie Bowl?
A smoothie bowl is an extra-thick smoothie that can be eaten out of a bowl with a spoon. The texture is key because if it's too runny, it's difficult to eat out of a bowl.
But with a few key ingredients, you can make your breakfast smoothie bowl thick enough to flip upside-down! *Do not attempt; stunts have been performed by trained professionals.*
Why You'll Love this Smoothie Bowl
- Most of the ingredients are kept in the freezer, which means you can make your creamy peanut butter avocado smoothie bowl any time of the year.
- Smoothie bowls only take a few minutes to make!
- Frozen bananas, avocados and zucchini create the trifecta of the most thick and creamy smoothie bowl ever.
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Frozen banana
- Avocado
- Frozen zucchini
- Milk - Both regular milk and dairy free milk work. I usually add homemade oat milk to my smoothie bowls.
- Peanut butter - Use your favorite nut butter or seed butter. Might I be so bold as to suggest homemade chocolate almond butter? 🙂
- Maple syrup - You can substitute honey.
Topping Options
You can top your smoothie bowl with just about anything you like! Here are some of my favorites.
- Sliced fresh fruit or berries
- Chopped nuts or seeds
- Chocolate chips
- Chocolate almond cashew granola
- Unsweetened coconut flakes
How to Make this Smoothie Bowl
- Steam & freeze the zucchini: Wash and slice a few zucchini into 1-inch chunks. Boil a few inches of water in a saucepan on the stove over high heat. Place the zucchini in a steamer basket over the saucepan. Steam the zucchini for 15 minutes, until easily pierced with a fork.
Set aside to cool to room temperature, then store in the freezer in an airtight container or freezer safe bag until you're ready to make a smoothie. - Blend: In a blender or food processor, blend the frozen banana, avocado, frozen steamed zucchini, milk, peanut butter, and maple syrup together until it is thick and creamy. Scrape the sides as necessary to ensure everything is blended together.
- Enjoy: Divide the smoothie into two separate bowls. Then add any toppings you desire and enjoy!!
Recipe Tips
- Peanut Butter: Creamy natural peanut butter is easier to mix into smoothies and to drizzle on top, since it's usually thinner than other types of peanut butter.
- Blending: Scrape down the sides of your blender with a spoon or rubber spatula several times while blending your smoothie to ensure everything gets creamy.
- Too Thick: If your smoothie is too thick, add one tablespoon of milk at a time.
- Too Thin: If your smoothie is too thin, add more frozen banana, avocado or zucchini.
- Storing: Store any leftover smoothie in the fridge for up to two days in an airtight container or covered with plastic wrap.
FAQ's
What's the difference between an acai bowl and a smoothie bowl?
Acai bowls are thick smoothie bowls made with acai berries. Usually acai bowls are made with acai powder along with other frozen fruits. Smoothie bowls could also contain acai, but they're even more versatile.
How do you thicken a smoothie bowl?
The secret to a thick smoothie bowl is using frozen banana, avocados, and frozen steamed zucchini. All three of these ingredients thicken your smoothie bowl, making it super creamy. Using less liquid also helps keep your smoothie bowl thick.
