Almond milk is a versatile nut milk that contains zero dairy and tons of nutritional benefits. Plus you can leave out all the preservatives and additives in store-bought almond milk when you learn how to make almond milk at home! It's so simple and requires just a couple ingredients.
Ingredients Needed to Make Homemade Almond Milk
Learning how to make almond milk at home is so simple, since all you need is raw almonds and water!
I like to add a sweetener to my nut milk like maple syrup. You could also sweeten your almond milk with honey, agave nectar, or a simple syrup.
And just a pinch of salt brings out the natural nutty flavor of the almonds.
How to Make Almond Milk at Home
Soak the almonds: In a large bowl, cover your almonds with room temperature water. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and leave on the counter for 8 to 12 hours.
Peel the almonds: Spread the almonds on a clean kitchen towel. Use your finger and thumb to rub each almond in the towel and slide them out of their skin.
Blend the almonds: In a food processor or blender, blend the soaked and peeled almonds with the water, salt and sweetener for 1 to 2 minutes, until the almonds have been pulverized.
Strain the almond milk: Strain the blended mixture into a large bowl through a thin kitchen towel or cheesecloth. Squeeze the mixture to get all the almond milk out.
Refrigerate and enjoy: Transfer your almond milk to an airtight container like a mason jar and refrigerate. Enjoy!!
Soaking and Peeling Almonds
Removing the skins from almonds is optional, but it makes your almond milk more nutritious.
Almond skins contain tannins, which prevent nutrient absorption in our bodies. So by peeling the almonds, we increase the amount of nutrients we are able to absorb.
Plus the skins easily slide right off after soaking the almonds overnight.
How to Store Homemade Almond Milk
Fridge: Homemade almond milk stored in an airtight container will last in the fridge for 3 to 5 days.
Freezer: You can also freeze homemade almond milk. The easiest way is to pour it into an ice cube tray and store that in the freezer for up to 6 months. Just pop your cubes of frozen almond milk out when you're ready to use them.
What to Do with Almond Pulp
Don't throw out the pulverized almonds that are left in your kitchen towel after straining your nut milk! This edible by-product of making almond milk at home is called almond pulp. You can add almond pulp to baked goods for extra flavor and a little crunchy texture including cookies, brownies and pancakes.
How to Use Almond Milk
Almond milk can be used in place of cow's milk in everything from a bowl of cereal to quiche.
Below are some of my favorite recipes to use almond milk:
- Cornbread
- Lemon Lavender Scones
- Pumpkin Pie Overnight Oats
