Hummus, also known as hommus, is a savory, creamy dip that originated in the Middle East. It takes only 5 main ingredients and 10 minutes to make!
About this Recipe
Hommus is traditionally eaten with bread in the Middle East. But since it's popularity has spread around the world, now it's also enjoyed with chips, pretzels, and vegetables.
Authentic Arabic hommus is made from boiled dried chickpeas (also called garbanzo beans). I use canned chickpeas to make the whole process faster. But if you choose to cook dried chickpeas, add about half a teaspoon of baking soda to the cooking water. This will soften the chickpea skins as they cook, so your hommus will be extra smooth.
Should I Remove Chickpea Skins?
Some folks recommend to remove the skins from the chickpeas before blending them.
I don't notice a huge texture difference, and removing all the skins is very time consuming, so I just leave the skins on.
And after spending the last five years in my kitchen developing fool-proof recipes for beginner home cooks, I think this hommus is the best since it only takes 10 minutes!
Ingredients
- Canned chickpeas
- Olive oil
- Fresh lemon juice
- Garlic
- Salt
- Ground paprika
How to Make Homemade Hommus
1. Add all the ingredients in a blender or food processor.
2. Blend for several minutes, scraping down the sides with a spatula periodically until the mixture is smooth and creamy.
3. To serve, spread the hommus on a plate. Top with ground paprika or sumac, a few whole chickpeas, chopped parsley, zaatar, or an extra drizzle of olive oil.
Recipe Variations and Substitutions
- If raw garlic upsets your stomach, use ¼ teaspoon garlic powder instead.
- Add ¼ cup tahini for an extra creamy texture and authentic flavor.
- I like my hommus really thick, but if you prefer more runny hummus, add one or two tablespoons of cold water as you blend the ingredients together.
- Optional toppings: chopped parsley, drizzle of olive oil, whole chickpeas, ground paprika or sumac, and zaatar.
